Grapes are a favorite snack around here. They are portable and don’t require any chopping now that my kids are older and delicious.
Now that my garden is in full bloom, I’ve been thinking about storing fresh fruits and vegetables properly. We are huge proponents of reducing food waste.
As I stared at the grapes, it got me thinking, what’s the best way to store grapes? Should they be stored in a plastic container? Should we wash them first?
We’ve got the answers to these and many more grape storage questions. Let’s go to The Chalkboard.

Best Way To Store Grape FAQs
What Is The Best Container To Store Grapes
Most grapes come in plastic containers with holes in the top. These are ideal for storage. The holes allow air movement, and the plastic prevents the grapes from squishing.
If your grapes didn’t come in a container, these storage containers from evionsits are a great option. They have vents that allow airflow, and the square shape makes them easy to clean and store. Purchase them on Amazon.
Best Way To Store Grapes After Washing
Ideally, you do NOT want to wash grapes before storing them. The water clings to the fruit and causes faster decay.
If you’ve washed the grapes already, you want to eliminate as much water as possible. You can allow them to air dry in a colander for a while, although I’ve found that some water still sticks around.
Your best bet is to lay them out on a clean dish towel and roll them around to dry. Alternatively, place them in a salad spinner for a few spins to dry.
After the grapes are dry, place them in a plastic container with holes in the top to keep them fresh.
Can I Store Grapes In A Sealed Container?
You can, but it’s not recommended.
Airflow helps maintain freshness. If you have a container with a lid, leave it slightly ajar or off altogether.
Should You Take Grapes Off The Stem?
Take the stems off if you plan on using the grapes immediately. Leave the branches on for storage.
When you take off the stems, often some skin comes off, too. This outer layer protects the fruit from the elements and spoilage. You want it intact for as long as possible.
Sometimes the grapes fall off the stems, and that’s ok!
Should I Store Grapes With A Paper Towel?
There shouldn’t be too much moisture if you store the grapes in a vented container. Therefore paper towels aren’t needed.
Can You Store Grapes In A Ziploc Bag?
You can store grapes in a Ziploc bag, but a hard-sided container is preferred since the grapes are delicate. If you use a freezer bag, leave it open to allow airflow. Also, ensure the fruit is completely dry before placing it in the bag.
Can I Store Grapes In Water?
Storing grapes in water is NOT recommended. The water decays the fruit faster. You won’t get the whole time out of your fruit. Dry it out first before storing it.
How To Store Grapes Without A Fridge?
Cold storage keeps the grapes fresh. If you have to place them outside the refrigerator, place them flat on a baking sheet lined with paper towels or a dish towel and plan on eating them within a day or so.

Grapes are my go-to snack and those with green vines are obviously more fresh and, thus, last longer (in addition to your suggestions).
