We are huge proponents of online grocery shopping here at The Kitchen Chalkboard. Life is busy, and the convenience of ordering food from the comfort of your couch is unrivaled. But sometimes the vegetable quality is only okay.
Our interest was piqued when we came across Farmbox Direct. Was it possible to have quality fruits and vegetables delivered to our homes?
It’s time to dive in with our honest Farmbox Direct review.
Let’s go to The Chalkboard.

What Is Farmbox Direct?
When Ashley Tyrner had trouble finding organic vegetables to feed her daughter, she knew she needed to do something. Shortly after that, a farmer’s daughter created FarmBox direct, a vegetable delivery service.
The company partners with local farms to create boxes of fresh produce for their customers. You can pick organic or non-organic fruits or vegetables and have them delivered each week.
How Does FarmBox Direct Work?
The company partners with farms and packs the produce in boxes shipped weekly to their customers. They currently deliver to most of the continental United States.
It is a subscription-based model, meaning that when you sign up, you are committing to weekly delivery. Although if you aren’t happy or need a vegetable break, it is easy to cancel.
Customers sign up via farmboxdirect.com and create an account. Once it’s activated, you can see the box options. Typically the company offers small, medium, and large boxes with organic or non-organic contents. Other specialty boxes target those into juicing or people with diabetes.
You can customize Farmbox Direct boxes.
Before each order, you will receive an email reminder. You can log on and make up to five substitutions for items in your box.
The small box has enough produce to feed a couple. The medium box fed my family of four for a week, and the large option could easily feed a large family.
Farmbox Direct Review 2022 — Does It Save You Money?
Farmbox Direct may not save you money. The recent medium box cost $57.93 via the website. The same food costs $31.35 via Amazon Fresh, our preferred online grocery delivery service. There are coupon codes out there.
The company does not charge a shipping fee, but they charge a $5.98 handling fee for every order.
Farmbox Direct Review 2022 — What Is The Produce Like?
Unlike Misfits Market and Imperfect Foods, which deliver services that rescue food you would otherwise discard, Farmbox Direct offers standard produce to homes. The quality was great for all items, even though they spent some time traveling.
The product is not as fresh as if you were getting a CSA box, but it is comparable to what a high-end grocer would carry. There were no marks or bruising, and it lasted over a week.
Farmbox Direct Review 2022 — Shipping
There is no shipping fee for Farmbox Direct boxes. The boxes ship to most of the continental US via FedEx. You will get an order each week, although you cannot choose your delivery day.
We placed our order on Tuesday and received it on Sunday. We did not receive a shipping confirmation, so it was a surprise when it arrived on our doorstep.
As for the packaging, of all the vegetable delivery services, Farmbox Direct had the best. Each item was individually wrapped in brown paper or placed in a plastic bag. Nothing was damaged or bruised during shipment, and there was very little waste.
Farmbox Direct Review 2022 — Who Is It Good For?
If you have a tough time finding good quality produce, Farmbox Direct is right. Be sure to properly store all of the items to ensure they last until you cook them.
You must also be willing to cook the food, so a basic skill level is required. It would be a waste to purchase a box only to get thrown out.
Farmbox Direct Review 2022 — Who Is It NOT Good For?
If you have lots of grocery stores nearby, Farmbox is not the best option for you. Other places will provide the same quality for less.
If you don’t cook often, you may want to skip Farmbox. Even if you chose the smallest selection, it’s still filled with items.
It’s also not the best option if you cannot put the produce away the day it arrives. The fruits and vegetables may not survive in the elements for too long; they are perishable.
Please note that it’s essential to cancel your account quickly if you decide it’s not right for you so you don’t get charged.
Is Farmbox Direct Worth It?
If you are having a tough time finding good produce nearby, Farmbox Direct is worth it. If you have many options for services and stores, it may not be the best bet.
Farmbox Direct Vs. Misfits Market
Misfits Market is our preferred vegetable delivery service. We love that they rescue produce that would normally contribute to the food waste problem in this country.
That being said, the quality of the produce of Farmbox Direct is top-notch.
Misfits have more of a selection, including dairy, cleaning products, etc., so you can get more of your shopping done at once. You can also fully customize your order.
